It’s incredibly important to me that I photograph my clients in something that reflects who THEY are. This is even more important to me as a lifestyle newborn photographer since I will be photographing you in your home. I want your wardrobe choices to be reflective of who YOU are.

what to wear - Online ordering

Order Online (unless you have the stamina to go shopping before baby’s arrival — I know I didn’t! I was a lazy pregnant woman).

Purchase a bunch of options that you like (in different sizes) and then return whatever you don’t like after you’ve had your baby and tried them on.place for you to tell your clients more about your story and to describe the type of photographer you are. You can come back at any time to make more changes.

Stay in same color palette

Wear white/cream, black, neutrals or pastels.

  • White is timeless and complements the newness and innocence of the baby.
  • Neutrals work well to keep the attention on the baby and away from your clothing.
  • Pastels also have that “new baby” look and are great if you want to coordinate your outfits with the nursery.
  • Black is best for moms who are worried about hiding their post-maternity belly, but I do shoot at angles that avoid showcasing that part of your body, so this shouldn’t be much of a concern.
  • I would avoid neon colors. Neon will make your face look like the color you are wearing is a photoshop nightmare :)
  • For dads, I always recommend a nice white or light blue button down, or a polo

go for comfort

Find something that you feel comfortable in. Our postpartum bodies can be frustrating and you don’t want to be pulling and tugging the whole session. Unless you are already back to pre-postpartum sizes or totally fine with your postpartum tummy, I suggest wearing something a little bit loose around your stomach so that you aren’t self-conscious during our session. It’s important that you feel beautiful and part of that is finding something you are comfortable wearing. I recommend a loose maxi dress or a flowy top with maternity jeans! Don't stress about shoes! Parents I photograph are either barefoot or wearing socks!

Avoid clothes that you’ll have to keep adjusting. If it doesn’t lay properly, your bra strap keeps needing to be tucked away, or the shirt is too short to stay tucked in, reconsider those options.

Do not wear clothes with words on them. Our eyes are immediately drawn to words in photographs. Keep the attention on your faces and the baby by avoiding clothing with company/brand names and with words like “big sister” for family photos (save the “big sister” shirt for a sibling photo where we can do a quick change).

FAQ

SHOULD I FEED MY BABY BEFORE THE SESSION?

Give your baby a good feed 30 minutes to an hour before the session and your baby may well be sleeping when I arrive. When they are asleep this is the perfect time to capture fingers and toes without too much movement!

DO YOU USE PROPS?

If you are looking for babies in baskets and buckets then I'm not the right photographer for you. I do use a timeless moses basket in some shots. The only items that usually get photographed with your newborn are a soft toy, perhaps a wee hat/bow and a blanket. For me, I think that is all that is necessary and I think that too many props gets fussy. I want the focus to be on the natural beauty of your baby.

WHAT IF MY BABY WON'T SETTLE?

If it's any consolation, I have photographed many, many babies and not once have I had one that didn't settle. Depending on how your baby is feeling, will drive my decisions on what kinds of photographs to do at that point. Babies cry. Sometimes alot. Usually once they've had a feed they do settle. I even capture pictures of them crying as I think it's all part of the newborn journey, so don't worry. Make sure to bring anything that soothes them, comfy, paci, bottle!

CAN SIBLINGS BE INCLUDED?

Absolutely, yes. If there is an older sibling they usually try and get in the pictures anyway! I like to capture touching moments between them and the new person in their lives. It's a curious time for them after all which creates a brilliant opportunity. How they interact and their expressions are all wonderful to photograph. Partners are also welcome to be a part of it. A family shot is most certainly on my list of must have shots during the newborn session. Sometimes families want just the baby and that is fine.

Hopefully this is helpful to you! I know I felt a little lost when I had my newborn session and it would have helped to have these tips when I was deciding what to wear. And of course, if you ever want my personal help, I’m happy to text/email/call back and forth to help you make the right choice for your session with me.
